Harvest Monday, 6/5/17

The first of the kohlrabi was harvested on Sunday. They were peeled, sliced, and then grilled on the barbecue with olive oil, garlic salt, and pepper. Quite delicious and they took hardly anytime to cook.

Harvested:
1.116 pounds of kohlrabi

Please join us for Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.

The grilled kohlrabi sounds yummy. I'll have to give it a try!

We haven't tried growing kohlrabi for years maybe we should try again. No doubt it would catch club root in our garden.

I must say that grilled kohlrabi sounds good. Looks like a fall option for us.

Great idea to grill the kohlrabi, I'll have to try that.

Yum! I'm really looking forward to picking some kohlrabi this spring as one of the only benefits of our cool weather is kohlrabi and turnips that are mild, sweet and not fibrous like last year!

I'll give that recipe a try when I'm ready to harvest mine. I'm unfamiliar with kohlrabi but grilling vegetables is always a great idea, right?

Your kohlrabi is looking good. I haven't grown any in a long while. I have to put mine int to the ground this w/e. I do love the colour of this variety. I have a recipe bookmarked for grilled kohlrabi calling it 'steaks'.

Hi Dave,
I never actually had it grilled before and it was delicious. And my husband has been asking whether anymore were sizable enough to eat.

Hi Sue,
Club root is such a terrible disease and there are a limited number of resistant cultivars. The kohlrabi were planted as seedlings just under 30 days ago, so I wonder whether fast growing brassicas would do better in your garden.

Hi Jay,
We've had a really mild spring this year for once with most days in the 80's, which is probably why the kohlrabi are doing so well. Plus they were planted in our shadiest bed. It looks like your whole garden gets lots of full sun, which I'm sure the summery vegetables love.

Hi Michelle,
The great thing about gardening is growing vegetables that aren't readily available in most grocery stores. I've been inspired to grow bulb fennel due to your blog, although it's taking mine forever to get pass the root-bound stunted seedling stage.

Hi Margaret,
Turnips grow amazingly fast even in cool weather. I wonder if I should try planting some once the kohlrabi get pulled, although it might be pretty hot by then. Do you mostly eat turnips raw? I've heard of them being mashed like mashed potatoes, but around here they slice them and simmer them with a little sugar and such.

Hi Lotte,
I really like kohlrabi they're really savory when grilled with just a hint of sweetness, and maybe a subtle cabbage flavor. But the flavor probably depends on the variety.

Hi Shaheen,
I wonder if the greens are good to eat on kohlrabi. Broccoli leaves are supposed to be delicious, so I'll probably try cooking kohlrabi leaves this week when we harvest a few more.
