Harvest Monday, 4/9/18

Harp and Clarinet spinach harvested Sunday. The spinach is staying nice and tender even with all the weird up and down weather. We had some last night in an omelet with a light sprinkling of cheddar, even the stems are delightful.
Red Russian kale was also harvested on Sunday. The kale did end up dying down with this year's extra cold winter, but it came back only to be bolting now. I can already see the florets forming which I imagine are very much edible.

Please, join us for Harvest Monday hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.

Your spinach looks wonderful. Mine never did do well this winter. I suppose that was because we had summer weather in January. It got to be full of aphids and bolted early so I never even harvested any. Kale sprouts are delicious!

The spinach is indeed lovely! My kale is bolting too. I've left some of mine for a bit longer and I will eat the flower buds as well as the leaves.

Those greens look delicious - I'm so looking forward the first greens of the season but it looks like my wait will be longer than usual this year.

Hi Michelle,
I've never had spinach overwinter this well before, they were definitely in a more protected spot. Aphids were always terrible on my Brussels sprouts when I lived out west, but they seem to leave yours alone.

It sounds like you got a bit more rain which is good. The weather's been so different this year, makes me wonder what the growing season will bring.

Hi Dave,
Some of the spinach is showing signs of bolting, at least this'll save me the trouble of transplanting them when we till. :) Your plants seem really happy with your light setup, I can't get over how lush your peppers are.

Hi Margaret,
It's been a strange spring, hopefully it'll warm up for you soon. I started a bunch of lettuce this spring, so it'll be fun to see how long they last for us.

I want to make more of an effort with spinach this year.

Nice, nice spinach. Mine did not fare so well over the winter this year but I hope to get some. Great way to start the season.

Hi Sue,
Spinach is so hit or miss depending on the weather. This is the first time I've gotten it to over winter and our springs are usually too warm for it to last. Your leeks have done so well and they've lasted through your cold winter.

Hi Mike,
You're having a super cold spring but your seedlings are looking good. They seem to be responding to the led lights. It's supposed to be warmer the rest of the week, I'm hoping the rain will hold off long enough for the ground to dry out so we can till.

Hi Kathy,
It's been nice having the spinach but it's mostly done, even the seedlings in the greenhouse are starting to bolt. I was going to seed some more greens but it might be too late to start them.
