9 inch okra and the first tomatoes of summer
Saturday's green bean haul
Wednesday's green bean harvest
This has been a week for firsts, the first green beans and the first tomatoes of the season. And they are all delicious! The green beans are coming in strong, I was able to harvest three large bowls full this week but I didn't get a picture of the very first harvest on Monday. One small tomato and two large cherry tomatoes were plucked from the vine on Saturday, the tomato became part of a tomato sandwich whereas the two cherry tomatoes were quickly popped into my mouth. Yum.

The okra have been producing for a couple of weeks, four were picked on Saturday with the largest being 9 inches long and still as tender as can be.

Weekly total:
3.5 pounds of green beans
0.25 pounds of okra
0.4 pounds of tomatoes

Please, join us at Daphne's Dandelions where we share our harvests every Monday!

Wow, great harvest. I'm jealous we are still several weeks away from green beans and at least a couple of weeks from tomatoes.

I like to think of cherry tomatoes as my garden food, if I get hungry just pop one down the hatch. Those beans look great! I'm expecting mine to flower eventually.

It's so exciting the tomatoes are ripening, eating fresh tomatoes everyday is the best!

But you have such wonderful springtime harvests. Our springs are so short it's a waste to even plant cool whether crops.

Hi Cristy!

Thank you, I just love fresh green beans. The big bush bean bed was originally planted in Derby, Contender, Romano, Masai, and Blue Lake 156, but a couple of rows didn't come up and were replanted with Kentucky Wonder which is just beginning to flower. Normally I just grow Romano which gives two really good flushes of flat green beans when kept well watered.

Yes! Cherry tomatoes are so wonderful to nibble on while working hard in the garden.

Wonderful green beans!
I had green garden peas earlier in the year.
My tomatoes are doing well, but not sure how they are going to stand this Summer's heat. We are beginning the 100 degree days here in Mississippi.
Happy gardening!

That is a beautiful green bean harvest. I love it when the bush and pole beans are one. Mine are growing but I am weeks away yet from green bean harvests. Looking forward to having bowls of them like your harvest this week.

Spring peas sound wonderful! How early did you plant the peas? I was thinking of planting peas and potatoes in February next year.

The heat is definitely on, we're supposed to get into the 100's by the end of the week too.

You have a lovely garden, I'm sure there are loads of green beans in your future!

The green beans have been wonderful this year. But I have to water almost everyday or they'll get burned up in the heat.

I am amazed as well! It's a smooth podded variety called Stewart's Zeebest from Baker's Creek Seed Co. I just ate the 9 inch okra sauteed with some soft eggs and it was as tender as can be, it was picked from the biggest and most lush of all the okra plants. I'm also growing Philippine Lady Finger which are smaller plants that do seem to get woodier quicker than the other variety.
