Snow Day

Snow in April is actually a very rare occurrence for Western Kentucky. The last time this happened was back in 1983, 35 years ago.

Tomorrow will still be cold but it should be sunnier, so I'm going to try to spend the day in the greenhouse potting up cold weather seedlings like kohlrabi, kale, and lettuces into individual containers. It'll be awhile before the soil dries out enough for tilling so it might be a little late for the pea seedlings, I'm debating on cutting them down and using the pea shoots in stir fries.

The kale and mache/corn salad overwintering in the garden are now both bolting. Although the overwintered spinach is still growing very well. I've got lots more spinach in the greenhouse ready to be planted, though they probably need to be fertilized at this point.

Onions and leeks seedlings are doing well even the reseeded Cipollini onions. Their flat has really tiny cells so they need to be either planted out soon or potted up into larger containers, something I'm not looking forward to.

After I get everything potted up into larger containers and it warms up this week, I'll do a tour of the greenhouse.

I'm not surprised that snow in April is a rare occurrence in Kentucky. It's not even all that common around here, although certainly more frequent than every 35 years! And guess what - it's now snowing as I right this...ugh!

Hi Margaret,
It seems everyone is having a fairly cold wet spring. Bleh. I ended up transplanting the cold weather seedlings into individual containers today, and tomorrow I'm going to try to start Asian greens and herbs.

It's crazy that critters are chewing through your drip lines. They're not edible, and yet they keep doing it.

Snow and cold and yuck! It has been a weird spring. We got a nice dose of rain yesterday although not quite the deluge that we were led to believe was going to happen. Still, any rain is welcome and we typically don't get much at all in April.

Hi Michelle,
Thank goodness you're getting some rain, maybe the rodents will leave for greener pastures. After getting our solar powered owl that has a motion detector making it hoot, I noticed we no longer get birds in our garden. I was just wondering if that might work for birds for you.

You seem to be having the same weather as we are!

I do remember the last time it snowed in April, because I had planted my tomatoes too early. They had to be replanted, and I learned to wait until later in the month. That was in my first garden, and one of many, many things I learned the hard way!

Hi Sue,
I saw that you had a late snow as well. The weather's been really strange, but hopefully it'll warm up soon. I'm starting to fall behind on the seed starting front, it's such a busy time of year.

Hi Dave,
I couldn't imagine seeing snow after planting out tomatoes, it sounds heartbreaking. I've lost peppers and eggplants to late frosts, now I'm always pulling seedlings in at any hint of low temperatures.
