Harvest Monday, 1/11/16

2 big white radishes on the left, turnips, carrots, and greens.
A big bowl of lettuce.

I'm writing this on Sunday Morning where it is a balmy 17 degrees Fahrenheit outside (-8 Celsius) with 4 inches of snow coloring the landscape.

Yesterday we were predicted to get 2-3 inches of rain, and boy did it rain. By nightfall the rain had turned into hard blowing snow as the temperatures dropped into the teens. Hopefully the vegetables will be protected under the thick blanket of snow. During all that rain I went out and picked a big load of lettuce, turnips, radishes, and a few carrots.

The lettuce will be used as wraps for a batch of banh xeo, a crispy crepe filled with hot shrimp, pork and shredded jicama. My grandma always substituted jicama in banh xeo when she didn't have bean sprouts. Some carrots were pulled for fresh eating, turnips and radishes for soups and stews.

I can see why turnips were such a staple crop in winter, they keep swelling and growing even with low daylight hours. And the variety di Milano a Colletto Viola takes overcrowding very well.

Please join us at Harvest Monday where gardeners share what's happenings in their vegetable gardens.

Oh yum, the banh xeo sounds so good! We love to wrap all sorts of things in lettuce leaves, but none of it would be familiar to your grandmother. :-) I hope your veggies make it through the cold weather, it would be so sad to see such good looking harvests come to an end.

I'm so surprised it gets that cold there! Is that a quirk this year or do you normally get temperatures that low in the winter?

Love that big bowl of lettuce. We are back to purchasing lettuce at the grocery store...ugh. I know what you mean about the turnips - it was actually tough to stay ahead of them as they grew so quickly. Next year I'm hoping to do some successions instead of sowing them all at once.

Hi Michelle,
The greens will probably suffer from the cold but hopefully the root vegetables will do ok. It looks like your winter broccoli and Brussels sprouts are doing really well.

Hi Margaret,
We normally get cold winters but sometimes we're lucky to get a nice long fall beforehand. I'm really interested in the Hakurei and Tsugaru turnips that Dave from Our Happy Acres said were ever so sweet.

Can you believe we've never grown turnips? I know, what a shame! Your post reminded me that we have to! Going to look into Milano a Colletto Viola variety too - thanks!

Nice harvest. The blanket of snow should act as an insulator and protect your root crops.

Hi Pamela,
Turnips are so easy to grow and there are some very sweet salad turnips that Margaret and Dave have grown like White Lady, Hakurei, and Tsugaru turnips.

Hi Norma,
It's supposed to rain today and then by Sunday it's supposed to get back down to the single digits. Ah well, we had been lucky with our winter so far.

That's so cold! I wouldn't have thought anything would survive, but it doesn't get much below 10celcius here
